CRUCIBLE

I'm a big GODZILLA fan. I have been for pretty much as long as I can remember. I've seen all of the "cannon" movies (as of this writing), and I even have a whole pile of them on video and DVD.
I've always wanted to write a Godzilla story -- something in the vein of Godzilla vs. The Thing (Mothra) or Ghidrah: The Three-Headed Monster (stories with both cool monster action and a good human story). Unfortunately, as of yet, I haven't been able to turn up any Big G writing assignments. (I'll keep looking, though!)
One day, my buddy and L5R editor Rob King asked if I'd like to write a monster story for Magic: The Gathering. Well, I didn't know much about monsters in Magic, but I picked up some books on the subject and paged through them, selecting monsters that might be fun to write. (My choices tended toward Lovecraftean and Kaiju types.) Then I sent Rob some story ideas.
When we discussed them, I mentioned that one of them was a Godzilla type of story. Rob, also being a G-Fan, said, "Why don't you do that one."
And so, I did.
CRUCIBLE is my unofficial Godzilla story. It's got the firey moster rampaging through an oriental-type setting (at least, as oriental as I could get in Magic). It also has shifty opportunists, an heroic woman, and some pretty cool village elders. In some ways, this would be more easily adapted as a Dai Majin (the Giant Majin -- living statue) story, than a Big G story. IN any case, it's still a kaiju (giant monster) story at heart.
Naturally, it also features my breezey prose and heavy doses of action.
